Addiction is a killer. The Music Industry has been taking action. Join us.

This article is about an important and potentially life saving training we are participating in, provided by iCAAD Events, May 10th – 13th 2018 – The International Recovery Institute’s Recovery Specialist Training, with 4 day Music Support / MusiCares module.

In our industry a recovery specialist is probably better known as a sober companion or coach, someone who is assigned to an artist with addiction or mental health issues (most commonly someone who has recently got sober or returned from rehab) and becomes their personal coach or mentor with regards to their issues, and help them in their recovery. The assignment will last for as long as it’s needed – normally at the start of the tour, promotional activity, recording etc.. but possibly for longer.

This role is becoming more and more widespread as the stigma around mental health and addiction is lifted and the need is recognised - a rapidly growing industry where no formal qualifications are required which means it is a popular area to operate without any substantial knowledge, skillset or even previous experience.

It’s an incredibly important and responsible position which is sometimes, literally, the difference between life and death.

This is why the right training and management is absolutely crucial so we can know who is looking after our people, have faith in them, and also know that they are receiving the necessary management, supervision and support themselves. I'm in a perfect position to understand this, and the need for it - I spent two years as a travelling Recovery Specialist, with my professional and personal experience as my qualifications. They were enough - just. But only just. And I am thankful that I didn't continue and that I turned my attention to Music Support and iCAAD instead. Which is why I am now helping to present these important events. Our previous events and workshops have been very well attended with amazing feedback. This is our biggest one yet.
